The current obesity crisis provides much fodder for the budding breast surgeon with an interest in breast reduction.
As the obesity crisis reaches epidemic proportions, especially in western countries, the number of breast reduction surgeries appears to be similarly on the rise.
Can the two phenomena be linked? In other words, can one be used as a proxy for the other?
When we are discussing about the future of breast reduction in Detroit, we have to know certain important things connected with the above-mentioned phenomena, and about the hormone oestrogen, fat and obesity issues. Adipose tissue, or fat is one component of the breast. The other is mammary tissue, which consists of the ductal system and glands, which are concerned with milk production and transport towards the nipple, to be delivered to an infant.
The mammary tissue is subject to circulating hormones concerned with milk production, such as prolactin, and of course, oestrogen, the female sex hormone.
It stands to reason that an increase in obesity levels in cities like Detroit would lead to a general increase in the size of women’s breasts, thereby increasing the need and therefore demand for breast reduction surgery.
But is this the only possible correlate?
Research has shown that male fish are becoming increasingly exposed to oestrogenising chemicals as a result of industrial dumping in rivers and seas.
There have been concerns about the possibility of this phenomenon amongst human boys although the evidence for this link is yet to materialise.
Similarly, of note is the apparent disproportionate oestrogenisation of girls as evidenced by the observation that girls appear to go into puberty at younger and younger ages, at least compared to four or five generations ago.
It is unlikely that excessive oestrogenisation leads to an increase in the overall stature of a girl, as in fact the effect of oestrogen during puberty would be to fuse the growth plate of terminal portion of long bones such as the femur (thigh bone) thus causing the overall effect of shorter stature compared to a girl who entered puberty at a later stage.
As oestrogenisation leads to development of the appearance of female secondary sex characteristics, earlier, and especially prolonged oestrogenisation would lead to the development of larger breasts than normal, we can compound the effect of obesity in a society where there is a tendency to obesity.
In cities like Detroit, all of these factors combined would result in an upward shift in the demand for breast reduction. If you are one of the persons in need of breast reduction in Detroit, be informed that there are some world-class clinics available there, all for performing surgeries of this nature.
Equally noteworthy is the social consequences of promiscuity among the young, resulting in an unprecedented number of teenage pregnancies and at progressively younger ages. Combine this with a subculture of ghetto mentality and reality TV shows which promote such behaviour and the effect is to exponentially drive the rates of this phenomenon to stellar levels.
The end result of this trend is that a woman in her twenties in Detroit may have already had several children, sometimes in quick succession. Although this is in keeping with normal physiological function, societal pressures dictate that she soon reaches a state of discontent with her body, particularly her breasts, and leads her to seek a procedure for breast reduction in Detroit.
Particularly in the United States, where a history of cosmetic surgery is already well established, and where economic stability is fairly stable, at least in relation to other countries in the world, it seems that the demand for breast reduction would be at its highest, given the above factors.
Considering that obesity levels are highest in cities like Detroit, the demand for breast reduction surgery or any other kind of cosmetic surgery involving the breast may well be evened out across America in terms of the reason for the surgery; in the sense that in cities like Los Angeles, the demand for breast reduction surgery is more likely to be due to a reversal of a previous breast augumentation whereas that in Detroit it may be due to a need fuelled by the obesity epidemic.
